Chamonix has been known for many years as the mountaineering and skiing capital of France. The
ski resort lies at the foot of Mont Blanc, which at 4807 metres, is one of the highest peaks in Europe.

People have been skiing in the snowfields of Chamonix since the late 19th Century and the remains
of the ski jump built for the first winter Olympic games in 1924 can still be seen.
Today Chamonix incorporates tradition and a cosmopolitan atmosphere with a wide range of attractions

The Vallée Blanche is one of the most famous off-piste ski areas in the world, and because of
the choice of routes means that it is within the capabilities of the average skier. The
20 kilometre off-piste experience beings at the L'Aiguille Du Midi cable car which you will t
ake to 3842m after a look at the surrounding views. Your ski guide will point out peaks and
interesting information about the area.
It is necessary to walk down a ridge for about 10 minutes. Your guide will rope you together
and is there to provide assistance on your way down. The ski guide will then assess your
skiing level and the mountain conditions before choosing the route. You will be able to get
out of the ski guides tracks in the areas where there is no risk but you will be required to follow
him when the crevasse danger is greater.

To ski the Vallée Blanche is a full day and there is no ski race so you may stop for photos and to
enjoy the views when you want.

When your ski group reaches the point where you leave the Mer De Glace and make your descent
down to Chamonix there are two ways, either by the forest tail which needs to be well covered
or in some places it will mean taking off ski's for a few metres, the tail also requires some
care as people are starting to feel tired. If the snow cover is not good enough to ski then
the gondola and Montenvers train will get you down to Chamonix without any effort. And so ends
a unforgettable ski day.

There are 5 main ski areas within the Chamonix valley, plus ski nursery slopes such as
ski Les Planards, ski Le Savoy, and ski Les Bosson which also has floodlit ski 3 nights a week on Red
or ski Blue graded pistes.

ski Le Tour:
Lies at the top of the valley and has one of the highest snow falls in France. To the right of
the of the main lift station is the beginners area of La Vormaine, there are only 2 drag lifts
here on Green and Blue pistes but it is a good place to learn.
At the top of the gondola is a wide open area with long Blue and Red graded pistes and it is a good
place to rediscover your ski legs. And now with the new 4 man chairlift on the Vallorcine, (Swiss)
side of the valley, there are some challenging Red and Black runs.

ski La Flégère and ski Le Brévent:
Now linked by a telepherique, they are both south facing and have wonderful views. The
Le Brévent is also the closest ski area to the centre of Chamonix and you can ski up to 2525m.
This Chamonix ski is an area for everyone, easy to tough and some of the best ski piste in the valley.

This is where ski piste and off piste merge, with packed tracked out snow between marked runs to big open
blows testing mogul fields plus a variation of pistes.

The top lift is 3300M and leads mostly onto glacier terrain, with a vertical descent of 1260m.
With your 6 or 7 day ski pass you have two free ski trips on the top cable car, there is a marked black
piste , but a more interesting ski is on the Argentiere Glacier where there is both crevasse and
avalanche danger so to get the best out of this run and take a guide for the half day and really
enjoy the ski off piste on the Grands Montets.

ski Les Houches:
At the front door of our chalet lies Les Houches which is a ski resort in its own right. There
are two main lift stations to take you up to the ski area.

The Bellevue, which is a telepherique and the Prarion gondolas which are 600 metres from the chalet.
The skiing is tree lined for all level of skiers plus "Piste Vert" the ski world cup downhill
course. If visibility is bad then this is the place to be.

Courmayer:
Just through the Mont Blanc Tunnel is the Italain ski resort of Courmayeur, not challenging ski-ing but
a big wide open bowl and a great lunch, and when the weather is bad on the Chamonix side of Mont Blanc,
then the sun is shining in Italy.
The Mont Blanc Tunnel will be open again this season and we will be taking people across for the
day but there will be a charge to cover the tunnel cost.
