Meribel

The Heart of the '3 vallees'

...the largest ski area in the world.

Meribel was founded by an Englishman in 1938, with the building of the first ski lift.   The resort has been built as a traditional chalet village with each building being constructed in the local stone and wood.   Today, the resort is spread over several hamlets at different altitudes.   The skiing convenience of these hamlets varies greatly.

Meribel Centre ( 1450 m ) is a one street village which has a number of boutiques and souvenir shops in addition to the usual sports shops and tourist information.   There is also one main supermarket, and a twice weekly street market where it's possible to find some bargains.

Meribel Mottaret ( 1700 - 1800 m ) is a doorstep skiing satellite situated further up the valley and which is also divided into several hamlets.   The higher attitude ensures good snow cover and makes Mottaret the starting point of the best skiing.

A free bus service connects the various part of Meribel.

Brides les Bains, situated in the valley below Meribel provides a budget base with access to the skiing via a 25 mins gondola ride.

If going self catering it is always worthwhile stocking up at the supermarkets in Moûtier where the choice is greater and prices are lower.
